Colonel Ramsarup new Commissioner, Customs: April 28, 2007
Retired Colonel of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and present Head of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) Colonel Chabilall Ramsarup has been identified to head the Customs and Trade Administration of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The GRA’s Governing Board met recently and considered Ramsarup’s appointment following the absence of Lambert Marks who has been away from work due to prolonged illness.
Since his absence from duty, Ms. Ingrid Griffith has been acting as Commissioner. Mr. Marks would proceed on leave beginning May 2.
Meanwhile effective May 2, Colonel Ramsarup will assume his new post as Supernumerary Commissioner for the Customs and Trade Administration.
Colonel Ramsarup was born in Good Hope, Mahaica on May 20, 1950. He completed his primary education with seven passes at the College of Preceptors Examination and continued his secondary education at the Guyana Polyphonic College where he obtained seven passes at the General Certificate of Education.
He began his working life on the September 1, 1969 as an Agricultural Technical Assistant with the Ministry of Agriculture after a six months course at the Guyana School of Agriculture. He joined the GDF on the September 15, 1973 where he started his career as a Cadet Officer.
Colonel Ramsarup served the GDF for 32 years. He retired on May 31, 2005. During his years of service to the GDF he held several positions including acting in the capacity as Chief-of-staff. He represented Guyana overseas on several occasions.
Following his retirement he was appointed Commissioner, Civil Defence Commission on June 1, 2005 a position he still holds.
Colonel Ramsarup has a degree in Public Management from the University of Guyana and a Masters of Science Degree (First Class Honours) which he obtained from the University of Madras.
He also holds a post graduate Diploma in Advanced Continental Defence from the Inter American Defence College in Washington.
For his outstanding work, Colonel Ramsarup was awarded the Military Service Medal a National Award in 1996 and the Military Efficiency Medal, the Border Defence Medal, and the 25th and 40th Anniversary medals.
Colonel Ramsarup is married, has two sons, three grandsons and two granddaughters.
